How to Specify Materials and Surface Finishes in an RFQ

A practical guide for engineers and buyers preparing material, heat-treatment and surface-finish requirements for a machining quotation.

Why a material name is not enough

A material family can cover different standards, supply conditions and possible equivalents. These differences affect stock availability, machining, heat treatment, inspection and cost. State the grade and governing standard rather than relying on a generic name.

Specific information helps a supplier check the correct stock and process.

Describe the surface finish

Terms such as anodizing, electroless nickel, zinc plating, black oxide or hard chrome are only a starting point. State the standard, treated and masked areas, colour, coating thickness and cosmetic requirements when they matter.

When is the dimension inspected?

Coating and heat treatment can change dimensions or surface condition. For critical features, define whether tolerance applies before or after treatment, where allowance is needed and how final inspection will be performed. VietTech reviews these points drawing by drawing.

Is a common material name sufficient?

Include the grade, standard and supply condition so similar but non-equivalent grades are not substituted.

Should tolerances apply before or after finishing?

Define this according to function. Critical dimensions should identify the final inspection condition and any masking or machining allowance.
