Flatness vs. Parallelism on a Machining Drawing

Flatness and parallelism both constrain surfaces, but differ in datum reference, function and inspection. A clear distinction supports a more accurate machining RFQ.

Short answer

Flatness controls the form of a surface itself and does not reference a datum. Parallelism controls the orientation of a surface or axis relative to a specified datum. The two requirements are therefore not interchangeable.

What flatness controls

A flatness tolerance zone is bounded by two parallel planes within which the entire actual surface must lie. It is commonly applied where stable contact, a mounting surface or control of warpage matters. By itself, it does not control the surface's location or angle relative to another surface.

What parallelism controls

Parallelism always relates to a datum. For a surface, its tolerance zone is also bounded by two parallel planes, but those planes are oriented parallel to the referenced datum. The inspection result therefore depends on how that datum is established on the part.

The practical difference

A surface may be flat yet tilted relative to its datum. Conversely, a parallelism callout should not be treated as permission to ignore local surface form. When both stable contact and directional relationship are functional, the drawing may need both controls at suitable tolerance levels.

How VietTech reviews inspection

What to state in the RFQ

An RFQ should explain the functional intent instead of relying only on a very tight geometric value.

  • The datum and how it is identified on the part
  • Whether tolerance applies before or after heat treatment or finishing
  • Support conditions for thin or flexible parts
  • Inspection report and sampling requirements
  • Applicable 2D drawing and revision

Common mistakes

Common issues include specifying flatness when the relationship between two surfaces is the real concern, calling out parallelism without a datum, or applying tight tolerances to a thin part without defining the support condition. Clarifying these points before quotation reduces differing interpretations.

Does flatness require a datum?

Does parallelism guarantee a perfectly flat surface?

Should every requirement be inspected on a CMM?
