01

Why consider grinding after heat treatment?

Heat treatment is used to obtain specified hardness, wear resistance or mechanical properties, but heating and cooling can change part size and geometry. Where a surface has a tight dimensional tolerance, flatness, parallelism, roundness, runout or finish requirement, grinding may be scheduled after heat treatment to establish the final condition. Not every hardened part requires grinding; the decision should follow the function of each feature.

02

What influences heat-treatment distortion?

Distortion is not determined by steel grade alone. Part geometry, section changes, residual stress from prior machining, the treatment route, furnace loading and quench severity can all influence the result.

  • Material grade and incoming condition
  • Geometry, size and section distribution
  • Residual stress after rough machining
  • Heat-treatment route and specified hardness
  • Support, suspension or loading during treatment
03

Surface grinding after heat treatment

Surface grinding is commonly considered for plates, blocks, guide components, fixtures and mounting datums. Within the available stock allowance, it can establish final thickness, flatness, parallelism and surface finish. Flatness controls the form of a single surface, whereas parallelism controls orientation relative to a datum; fixturing and inspection must reflect that distinction.

Cylindrical grinding after heat treatment

Cylindrical grinding is typically applied to shafts, pins, sleeves and precision bearing or seal diameters. Depending on the drawing, it may establish final diameter, roundness, runout and the relationship between multiple diameters. Datums, centres and workholding surfaces should be planned before heat treatment; if suitable location features are lost, finish grinding may become difficult or impractical.

How grinding allowance is determined

Grinding allowance is stock intentionally retained for finishing after heat treatment. A single default value should not be applied to every component. The allowance should reflect material, geometry, size, heat-treatment route, expected distortion, final tolerance and workholding. Too little stock may leave areas unground; excessive stock increases cycle time and grinding heat.

06

Can grinding correct all distortion?

No. Grinding only removes material within the available allowance. Recovery may be impractical if bow or warpage exceeds that allowance, finished size cannot be maintained, suitable datums are unavailable, walls are too thin, or additional removal would compromise effective case depth. Any straightening operation must also be reviewed against material, hardness and part geometry.

Information to define on the drawing

Clear drawing requirements allow the supplier to plan the manufacturing sequence and final inspection condition.

  • Material grade and heat-treatment specification
  • Required hardness and effective case depth where applicable
  • Surfaces to be ground after heat treatment
  • Final dimensions, tolerances and geometric controls
  • Surface roughness
  • Machining and inspection datums

Inspection and related capability

Depending on the drawing, final inspection may cover size, flatness, parallelism, perpendicularity, roundness, runout, surface roughness or hardness. Measuring equipment is selected for the characteristic and tolerance level to be verified. VietTech provides CNC milling, CNC turning, surface grinding, cylindrical grinding, wire EDM and dimensional inspection. Heat treatment and surface finishing are coordinated with experienced partners. Operation sequence, stock allowance and finishing route are reviewed against the material and heat-treatment requirements of the component.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does every heat-treated component require grinding?

No. Grinding is selected according to final dimensional, geometric and surface requirements and the function of the feature.

Can a component be machined to final size before heat treatment?

In some cases, yes. For tightly toleranced features, expected distortion and the need for post-treatment allowance should be reviewed first.

Can one grinding allowance be used for every part?

No. Allowance depends on material, geometry, size, heat-treatment route, hardness and final tolerance.

Does VietTech perform heat treatment in-house?

VietTech coordinates heat treatment and surface finishing with experienced partners to meet the requirements of each component.
